THE UNOFFICIAL FOOTBALL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP (#UFCC)

In September 2004, while I was on my honeymoon, I came across an article in FourFourTwo magazine reveleing that the editorial team had identified the Unofficial Football World Champions. They subsequetly set a challange of determining who could be the Unofficial Football Club Champions. Inspired by this, I set about analysing more than 150 years of league and cup results.

The question, however, was where to begin. Should it start with Wanderers, winners of the first FA Cup in 1872, or elsewhere?

Ultimately, the decision was made to begin with the first FA Cup match in which a goal was ever scored: Upto Park versus Clapham Rovers at West Ham Park in London, with Clapham Rovers winning the match 3-0.

Under this system, each club is awarded a point for every match they win. If a different team wins the subsequent match in chronological order, regardless of the competition, that team is deemed to be the Unofficial Football Club Champion. In the event of a draw, the title is retained until a decisive result is achieved.

The team at FourFourTwo has conducted extensive research into the Unofficial World Champions, and further information can be found on their website:

There are a number of other different versions and these can be found as follows:

France, Germany, Portugal and the Women's world version.

In each of World Club version and the English versions, the unofficial competitions that took place in England during the two world wars have not been included. However, the lineage can be followed here for the First World War and Second World War. Both show where they merge back into the main versions.

Here's a video (with thanks to EuroFut channel!) explaining it all a bit more from the start of the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025:

As was often the case, there remained one further unofficial project to complete: a Scottish version. I am aware, from information shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), that there have been several attempts to undertake this work. The latest version can found in this link.

There is no definitive record of the first ever goalscorer in the Scottish FA Cup. However, it is generally accepted that the match between Renton and Kilmarnock was the first fixture to be played in the competition.
