Elections for promotion to Scottish League Division One In 1893 professionalism was belatedly recognised by the Scottish Football Association and the Scottish Football League was expanded with the addition of Division Two. The competition was still dominated by clubs from the west of Scotland but there were now four sides from Edinburgh: Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian, St Bernard's and Leith Athletic. There was no automatic promotion or relegation between the two divisions. The bottom three clubs in Division One had to compete in an election with the top three sides from Division Two at the League AGM each year while the bottom three Division Two clubs had to apply for re-election. Division Two teams could apply for election to Division One regardless of where they finished. This system was designed to ensure that only clubs with substantial support would compete in the top flight although there were several examples of popular teams being denied elevation for political reasons. Dundee (14 votes) and Leith Athletic (8 votes) were re-elected to Division One but Renton (3 votes) were not re-elected. Clyde who finished 3rd in Division Two were elected to Division One (14 votes). Cowlairs (4 votes) and Hibernian (1 vote) were not elected to Division One. A subsequent motion by John McLaughlin of Celtic that future Division Two champions be automatically promoted was not seconded and therefore did not proceed to a vote.
