For the first time, not all of the Division Three (North) clubs competed in the cup.

Eight teams - Barnsley, Chester, Doncaster Rovers, Halifax Town, Lincoln City, Southport, Stockport County and York City - all declined to enter.

The competition was abandoned after this season.
